Lubomir Varbanov

Lubomir Varbanov is Managing Director and Head of Public Sector Solutions (PSS) for Asia Pacific at major global (re)insurer Swiss Re, where he leads the only group in the insurance industry fully-dedicated to partnering with Governments, multilateral organisations, sovereign wealth funds, development banks, export credit agencies and other public sector entities. Based in Singapore, he oversees a team of seasoned professionals across the region, including in Australia, China, India, Japan and Singapore. The PSS team is active in the Property&Casualty, Life&Health and Specialty reinsurance segments, as well as in primary insurance, asset management operations and risk analytics and solutions.
Prior to joining Swiss Re, Lubomir built over 25 years of industry and investment (debt, mezzanine and equity) experience in emerging and developed markets, leading and advising on over US$10 billion of investments worldwide. Between 2002 and 2022, he held a variety of roles at the International Finance Corporation (IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group) in Washington D.C. and Singapore, most recently as Head of New Business, APAC and Global Head of Equity in the Infrastructure and Natural Resources team. Before IFC, Lubomir was Head of Corporate Finance at energy multinational BG Group (now part of Shell) in London.


Lubomir has served as Non-Executive Director on the boards of companies in Europe, Africa and Asia, most recently at Hero Future Energies, a leading Indian renewable energy platform. His particular focus is in the areas of strategy, risk management and ESG, where he possesses deep and extensive experience from his global work in both industry and financial services. Lubomir holds a BA in Business Studies and Languages from Regent’s College, London and an MSc in
Finance from London Business School. A dual Bulgarian/British national, he is married with three children, and speaks Bulgarian, French, German and Russian.
